Based on the updated forecast from the Department of Meteorology, the depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to develop into a deep depression by evening today (1st December 2020).

It is likely to cross over the east coast of Sri Lanka between Batticaloa and Mullaitivu as a cyclonic storm. As forecasted by the regional cyclone prediction center (refer figure below), the color red indicates the approximate path of the storm (the median of several model outputs), and the color green indicates the uncertain areas (Cone of uncertainty).

The impact of the storm is uncertain at this point and the strength of the system is yet to be determined, however the current forecast predicts that, it will conform to the nature of a storm in the event it crosses over the country, across the Trincomalee area towards Mannar.
