Microsoft has recently announced a groundbreaking new feature for its productivity suite: Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Copilot is an AI-powered assistant that works alongside you in the Microsoft 365 apps you use every day, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and more. Copilot can help you unleash your creativity, unlock your productivity, and uplevel your skills by generating the content, providing feedback, summarizing information, and more.

What is Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Microsoft 365 Copilot is based on large language models (LLMs), which are advanced AI systems that can understand and generate natural language. Copilot leverages GPT-4, one of the most powerful LLMs developed by OpenAI, as well as your data in the Microsoft Graph, which includes your calendar, emails, chats, documents, meetings, contacts, and more.

Copilot can turn your words into actions by understanding your natural language prompts and commands. For example, you can ask Copilot to "draft a two-page project proposal based on the data from [a document] and [a spreadsheet]" or "change the tone of the document to be more casual" in Word. Copilot will then generate a first draft for you or rewrite your document accordingly.

Copilot can also work across multiple apps and data sources to perform tasks that were previously impossible or tedious. For example, you can use Business Chat, a new experience that integrates Copilot with the Teams chat interface, to ask Copilot to "tell my team how we updated the product strategy" or "schedule a meeting with [a person] next week". Copilot will then create a status update or a meeting invitation based on your previous communications and documents.

How does Microsoft 365 Copilot benefit you?

Microsoft 365 Copilot aims to transform work in three ways:

  • Unleash creativity: With Copilot in Word and PowerPoint, you can jump-start the creative process by getting a first draft or a presentation outline from Copilot with just a simple prompt. You can also get suggestions for relevant content from across your organization or online sources. You are always in control as the author or presenter; you can keep, modify, or discard any of Copilot's suggestions.

  • Unlock productivity: With Copilot in Excel and Outlook, you can save time and effort by letting Copilot handle complex calculations or repetitive tasks for you. You can also get insights from your data or emails with just a few words. For example, you can ask Copilot to "create a pivot table showing sales by region" or "summarize this email thread".

  • Uplevel skills: With Copiot in Teams and Viva Learning, you can learn new skills or improve existing ones with personalized feedback and recommendations from Copiot. You can also access relevant learning resources from within your workflow. For example, you can ask Coipot to "show me how to use formulas in Excel" or "suggest some courses on project management".

How does Microsoft 365 Coipot ensure security and privacy?

Microsoft 365 Coipot is designed for the needs of the enterprise. It follows Microsoft's AI principles and Responsible AI Standard, which guides the development and deployment of AI technologies.

Microsoft's work on AI is reviewed for potential harms and mitigations by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, ethicists, engineers, lawyers, policymakers, customer advocates, human rights experts, and external stakeholders.

Microsoft 365 Coipot also respects your data security and privacy. It does not store any of your data outside of Microsoft Graph, which is encrypted at rest and in transit.
